FAQs

Q: How can I join the UConn Dance Company?

A: Auditions for each semester are held shortly after arrival on campus and the school-wide Involvement Fair. Returning members must audition every semester as the company is continuously growing. Please email the executive board at uconndancecompany@gmail.com to be notified of upcoming auditions.

Q: What should I expect at auditions?

A: Dancers will be assessed on technique and ability to learn choreography, as well as any special skill required by choreographers. Our audition is comprised of technique, jazz, contemporary and hip hop portions. Acceptance to the company is contigent on success in these areas. If admitted, dancers will be able to sign up for the pieces they'd like to be considered for. The casting process will follow soon after.

Q: What should I wear to auditions? Do I need to wear shoes?

A:  Please wear tight fitted clothes that are comfortable to move in. Hair should be pulled neatly out of one's face. Shoes are not required, but allowed as a personal preference.

Q: How much of a time commitment is the company?

A: Though joining the company is a time commitment, it is nothing a student will not be able to balance. Many members joined in the fall of their freshman year and still feel as if they transitioned into college smoothly. Also, many members are involved in other activities, jobs, and organizations throughout campus and still have time to dedicate to the company. A member may commit to a minimum of two hours a week or up to six hours per week. It is true to say, the more you put into the company, the more you will get out of it.

Q: Can graduate students audition/be a part of the company?

A: The Undergraduate Student Government will only give funding to groups consisiting of exclusively undergraduate students. Therefore, we are unable to accept graduate student dancers into the company.

Q: Is there a financial requirement to be a part of the company?

A: There is no fee to audition, however we do have dues to maintain an active status in the company per semester. Student dancers are charged a fee of $10 per dance that they commit to being a part of.

Q: Do I need to have any previous dance experience?

A: We base our selection process on technique and ability to pick up choreography. These skills are typically picked up through previous dance experience and are extremely important to an auditioning dancer.
